Etymology: < Canadian French chantier lumberjacks' camp or work yard (1672), log cabin (1826), specific sense development of French chantier place where timber is stored (1553 in Middle French), open-air workshop (late 17th cent.), ultimately a specific sense development of chantier prop (see chanter n.3). Compare earlier shanty n.1
