Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French chansonnier.
Etymology: < French chansonnier songbook (14th cent. in Middle French in an isolated attestation, subsequently from the end of the 18th cent.), writer or performer of songs (17th cent.; 1862 in the specific use with reference to cabaret) < chanson chanson n. + -ier -ier suffix.
1. Chiefly in France or French contexts: a writer or performer of songs, esp. satirical songs in a cabaret; a singer of chansons.
