Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French chanson.
Etymology: < Middle French, French chanson song (c1100 in Old French as chançun ) < classical Latin cantiōn- , cantiō cantion n. Compare canzone n. and the Romance parallels cited at that entry.
Any French song or song set to French words; esp. a French polyphonic song of the late Middle Ages and Renaissance. Now also: a genre of French popular music, sung in French typically by singer-songwriters, and often having poetic or political lyrics.
