Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from French. Or (ii) a borrowing from Latin. Etymons: French affluer; Latin affluere.
Etymology: < (i) Middle French affluer (French †affluer , obsolete after the late 17th cent.) to possess (something) in abundance (1372 in affluer en ), to flock, to congregate (1375; earlier in sense ‘to supply (something)’ (1340)), or its etymon (ii) classical Latin affluere to flow towards, to come flocking < af- , variant of ad- (see af- prefix) + fluere to flow (see fluent adj.). Compare earlier affluence n., affluent adj.
Obsolete. rare.
intransitive. To flock, to congregate.
