Etymology: Middle English chaudoun , < Old French chaudun (caldun , caudun ) < Latin type caldunum , compare medieval Latin caldūna , (‘de novem ovibus fiunt fercula quae vocantur caldunae , Du Cange’); apparently a derivative or compound of calidus hot, but the latter part of the word is obscure. In Middle Low German kaldûne , modern German kaldaune-n . In later English corrupted apparently by form-association with chaldron n. (See also chowder n.)
