Etymology: < French charlatan ‘a mountebanke, a cousening drug-seller, a pratling quack-salver, a tatler, babler’ (Cotgrave), < Italian ciarlatano = ciarlatore babbler, patterer, mountebank, < ciarlare to babble, patter, act the mountebank, < ciarla, chat, prattle; compare Spanish charlar, Portuguese charlar, Wallachian charrar, Old Northern French charer (Diez) to prattle, babble. Compare quack to gabble like a duck, talk like a Cheap Jack, puff patent medicines, act as a charlatan.
