With plural agreement. Small or young fish. Occasionally also in singular (with unchanged form).

Small fish or other small aquatic animals, esp. young fish when they appear in large numbers.

Of a salmon: that is spawning or has recently spawned and as a consequence is in poor condition. Cf. clean, adj. 5b. Now chiefly historical.
