Etymology: < Old French chancel(l)erie, < chancelier chancellor n.; compare late Latin cancellāria , Provençal cancelaria , Spanish cancelaria , Italian cancelleria , Catalan cancelleria : see -ery suffix. Contracted at an early date to chancelry , chancery n.; also, partly refashioned as Chancellary n.
