Etymology: < classical Latin adventīcius (in post-classical Latin also adventitius) that comes from without, external, dependent upon or connected with external circumstances, extraneous, that comes from abroad, foreign, (of property) obtained otherwise than by direct inheritance from one's parents, produced or occurring accidentally ( < advent- , past participial stem of advenīre (see advene v.) + -īcius : see -itious suffix1) + -ous suffix. Compare French adventice (1532 in Middle French in an apparently isolated attestation, subsequently from 1751; already in Anglo-Norman and Old French as aventiz, adventiz (adjective) foreign, (noun) stranger, foreigner, alien (first half of the 12th cent.)).
