Etymology: Originally < cheer n.1 + ho int.1 With the subsequent variation in the ending compare O int., oh int. Compare earlier what cheer? at cheer n.1 Phrases 5 and later cheerio int., cheers int.After the First World War (1914–18) this word was largely supplanted by cheerio int., adj., and n.
colloquial. Now rare.
