Etymology: < cheer n.1 + -ly suffix2. Compare cheerily adv. and earlier cheerfully adv.It is possible that some early forms in -ely , -elie reflect trisyllabic pronunciations, and therefore show cheerily adv. rather than this word. (Rhyme shows that this is not the case for quot. 1546 at sense 1a.)
