1849 W. H. Harvey Man. Brit. Marine Algae (ed. 2) 69 In the ceramidium the conceptacular fruit is brought to its highest development. This organ is ovate or urn-shaped, furnished with an apical pore, and containing a tuft of pear-shaped spores, rising from the base of the cavity.
1902 Encycl. Brit. XXV. 270/1 In Rhodomelaceæ there is a special urn-shaped envelope surrounding the sporogenous filaments. This is a ceramidium.
