Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; modelled on a German lexical item. Etymons: centro- comb. form, sphere n.
Etymology: < centro- comb. form + sphere n., after German Centrosphäre (1871 or earlier in sense 1; 1893 in sense 2: E. Strasburger, in Anatomischer Anzeiger 8 179; now usually Zentrosphäre).
1. Philosophy. In the terminology of K. T. Bayrhoffer: an indivisible elementary unit of being; a monad (monad n. 2a). Obsolete. rare.

2. Cell Biology. A mass of cytoplasm from which the asters extend during cell division and within which the centrosome lies when present; also called attraction sphere.
