Biology a central zone or region of cytoplasm; spec. (a) the cytoplasm within, or immediately surrounding, the centrosome; (b) a more or less distinct central region in many cyanobacterial cells, containing less photosynthetic pigment and more nucleic acid material than the peripheral cytoplasm (chromatoplasm).
