Forms: 1600s centrobarick, 1700s centrobaryc, 1700s– centrobaric.
Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin centrobaricus.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin centrobaricus (1621 or earlier; compare earlier centrobaticus (a1494)) < Byzantine Greek κεντροβαρικός (implied by the nouns κεντροβαρικά (neuter plural), title of a treatise by Archimedes on the centre of gravity, κεντροβαρική (feminine) theory of the subject) < ancient Greek κεντρο- centro- comb. form + βάρος weight (see baro- comb. form) + -ικός -ic suffix. Compare centrobarical adj.
1. Of or relating to the centre of gravity. Chiefly in centrobaric method n. a method of calculating the area of a surface or the volume of a solid which is generated by a line or surface respectively (esp. by revolution about a fixed axis) having first determined the centre of gravity of that line or surface. Now rare. The centrobaric method is based on the fact that the product of the distance traversed by the centre of gravity of the generating line or surface and the length or area of that line or surface is equal to the surface area or volume of the body formed.
