A self-reproducing organelle consisting of a cylindrical array of microtubules, which is present in the centrosome, usually as one of a pair, and plays a role in organizing the mitotic spindle; cf. centrosome n. 1, 2. Also (with distinguishing word): a similar structure present at the basal end of a cilium or flagellum; a basal body or kinetosome.
