单词 a-week
释义

a-weekadv.

Brit. /əˈwiːk/, U.S. /əˈwik/
Forms:

α. Old English on ucan (rare), Old English on wica (Northumbrian), Old English on wican, Old English on wucan.

β. see a prep.1 and week n.

Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: on prep., week n.
Etymology: < on prep. + week n. The β. forms show phonological reduction of the first element (compare a prep.1). In later use reinterpreted as showing the definite article a (compare a adj. 4 and the note at the definition below). Compare aday adv.
Each week; per week; weekly.Modern uses of a week in this sense are understood as the syntactic collocation of a (a adj. 4) and week. Solid and hyphenated forms are taken to show continuing use of the original phrase, treated as a compound; the hyphenated forms remain fairly common into the early 20th century.
