Etymology: Blend of central adj. and the name of Australia (see Australian n. and adj.).
Originally and chiefly Australian.
1. (A proposed name for) the colony of South Australia, which in the late 19th century included the whole central belt of the continent running from north to south, including what subsequently became the Northern Territory. Obsolete.Also proposed as a name for various other locations in Australia (see quots.), none of which were ever formally adopted or became widely established, other than as covered at sense 2.

I mean something like ‘Centralia’, ‘Centralinia’, or ‘Centria’.
1880 S. Austral. Chron. & Mail 18 Dec. 17/2 You have suggested Adelaide as the new name [for South Australia]... Alexandra and Alberta have too modern a sound; Centralia (et hoc genus omne) does not sound English.
1888 Newcastle (New S. Wales) Morning Herald 22 Feb. 4/7 Centralia is a suggested name for Sydney in the present time of alterations in the nomenclature of the colony.
