Origin: A borrowing from German. Etymon: German Alkyl.
Etymology: < German Alkyl (1860 or earlier) < Alk- (in Alkohol alcohol n.) + -yl -yl suffix.
Chemistry.
1. Any of the series of hydrocarbon groups or radicals derived from alkanes by the removal of a hydrogen atom, as methyl (—CH3), ethyl (—C2H5), propyl (—C3H7), etc. Cf. aryl n.Recorded earliest as a formative element in compound names.
