Etymology: < chamber n. + musician n., probably after either German †Kammermusikus (1650 or earlier in plural cammer-musici , with Latin inflectional ending; apparently > Italian †musico di camera (1744 or earlier)) or Kammermusikant (1741). Compare earlier chamber music n.
Originally: a musician employed to perform privately, esp. at court; (subsequently chiefly) a musician who plays chamber music.
