1. The alphabet. Cf. cross-row n. Now historical.So named from the figure of a cross prefixed to the alphabet in hornbooks and primers for teaching children to read; cf. Christ-cross n. 2a.The reference to Malachi in quot. 1762 can be explained by the fact that the Old Testament was the reading book given to the most advanced pupils.
