释义

centigradeadj.n.

Brit. /ˈsɛntᵻɡreɪd/, U.S. /ˈsɛn(t)əˌɡreɪd/
Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French centigrade.
Etymology: < French centigrade (1797 in thermomètre centigrade , or earlier) < centi- centi- comb. form + grade grade n. Compare earlier Celsius n.
A. adj.
1.
a. Designating a thermometer or scale of temperature in which there are 100 degrees between the freezing point and boiling point of water, with the former at 0 and the latter at 100. Symbol °C or C.For a scale with the freezing point of water at 100 and the boiling point at 0, see the note at Celsius n. 1.Centigrade was the usual name for the temperature scale until the 20th cent. In 1948 the 9th International Conference on Weights and Measures agreed to use the term Celsius in place of centigrade (see 1949 at Celsius adj.), and this is now the usual term in scientific use (see Celsius n. 2a); centigrade continues to be in common use otherwise.
