Etymology: < classical Latin Centaurus centaur n.The use of the Latin genitive form as postmodifier in star names is a practice that originated in post-classical Latin. Compare earlier centaur n., which (in Old English) shows an earlier borrowing of the same Latin word.
Astronomy.
(The name of) a large, bright constellation of the southern hemisphere, flanking Crux; the Centaur. Also used as a postmodifier (typically in form Centauri) in the names of stars belonging to this constellation. Abbreviated Cen (no point).Centaurus contains Alpha Centauri, the star system closest to the sun.One of the 48 Ptolemaic constellations, traditionally said to represent Chiron, the famous centaur of Greek mythology.
