Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: character n., -ism suffix.
Etymology: < character n. + -ism suffix. In sense 3 after classical Latin charactērismus delineation of character, characterization, or its etymon Hellenistic Greek χαρακτηρισμός characterization. In use with reference to the linguistic theories of Kant (in later use in sense 1) after German Charakterismus (1790 in Kant's Kritik der Urtheilskraft in this sense).With use in sense 3 compare the following earlier quots., which show occasional unassimilated borrowings of classical Latin charactērismus:1550 R. E.i.v The thyrde kinde is called Charactirismus, that is the efficcion or pycture of the bodye or mynde, as Dauus describeth Crito, & Mitio describeth Demea.1555 R. Sherry Treat.
