Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymons: French chambellein, chamberlain; French chambellan, chamberlain.
Etymology: Originally < Anglo-Norman chambellein, chambelleyn, Anglo-Norman and Middle French chambellain (first half of the 14th cent. or earlier), variants (with assimilation of -rl- to -ll- ) of chamberlain, chambrelain, etc. (see chamberlain n.). In later use reborrowed < French chambellan (from the 13th cent. in Anglo-Norman and Middle French), originally a variant (with assimilation of -rl- to -ll- ) of chamberlain, chambrelain, etc. (see chamberlain n.), which later became the dominant and now standard French form. Compare post-classical Latin cambellanus (15th cent. in French and Scottish sources).In grand chambellan (see quots. 1663, 1954 at β. ) after French grand chambellan (early 15th cent. in Middle French as grant chambellan; now historical). Compare the following isolated attestation of French grand chambellan in an English context:1604 R. Dallington View of Fraunce sig. I4 The Office of grand Chambellan, great Chamberlayn, was long in the house of Tankeruile... His priuiledges are now nothing so many as in times past.
