Etymology: Originally < Anglo-Norman chambellein, chambelleyn, Anglo-Norman and Middle French chambellain (first half of the 14th cent. or earlier), variants (with assimilation of -rl- to -ll- ) of chamberlain, chambrelain, etc. (see chamberlain n.). In later use reborrowed < French chambellan (from the 13th cent. in Anglo-Norman and Middle French), originally a variant (with assimilation of -rl- to -ll- ) of chamberlain, chambrelain, etc. (see chamberlain n.), which later became the dominant and now standard French form. Compare post-classical Latin cambellanus (15th cent. in French and Scottish sources).In grand chambellan (see quots. 1663, 1954 at β. ) after French grand chambellan (early 15th cent. in Middle French as grant chambellan; now historical).
