Etymology: < Anglo-Norman and Old French, Middle French -alté, forming nouns (e.g. Anglo-Norman mairalté mayoralty n.) on the model of words formed in -té -ty suffix1 on adjectives in -al -al suffix1, such as realté realty n.1, principalté principality n. Compare -ality suffix, -ty suffix1.Found in Middle English in the borrowing mayoralty n., and also in the 16th cent. in the noun of condition mesnalty n.
