单词 cenozoic
释义

Cenozoicadj.n.

Brit. /ˌsiːnə(ʊ)ˈzəʊɪk/, U.S. /ˌsinəˈzoʊɪk/
Forms:

α. 1800s– Kainozoic, 1800s– Cainozoic.

β. 1800s– Caenozoic, 1900s– Cenozoic.

Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element. Etymons: ancient Greek καινός , -zoic comb. form1.
Etymology: < ancient Greek καινός new, recent (see -cene comb. form) + -zoic comb. form1, after Palaeozoic adj. Compare Mesozoic adj.The α. forms reflect the diphthong of the Greek etymon. The β. forms show an alteration based on the spelling conventions for Latin words of ultimately Greek origin (compare cenosite n. beside kainosite n.); these forms of the word did not become common until the late 19th cent. For the α. forms N.E.D. (1888) gives the pronunciation as (kainozōu·ik, kēino-) /kaɪnəʊˈzəʊɪk/, /keɪnəʊ-/.
