Etymology: < case n.2 + worm n.In senses 1 and 2 so called with reference to the protective cases which they form. With sense 1 compare caddis-worm n. at caddis n.2 Compounds and earlier codworm n.1 In sense 3 after German Hülsenwurm (1819; 1903 in the passage translated in quot. 1906; < Hülsen- , combining form of Hülse husk, case (see hull n.1) + Wurm worm n.), itself after scientific Latin Echinococcus (see echinococcus n. at echino- comb. form ).
