Origin: Of uncertain origin. Perhaps formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: case n.2, case v.1, -ment suffix.
Etymology: Origin uncertain. Probably < either case n.2 or case v.1 (although this is first attested later) + -ment suffix, although perhaps compare Old French enchassement frame (see enchasement n.).Compare the following earlier instance of a vernacular word in a Latin linguistic context, apparently denoting a matrix cut into a stone tomb into which an inscribed brass plaque was set (compare sense 1b), although it is unclear whether this is to be interpreted as an earlier instance of the present word or as an (otherwise unattested) parallel formation in Anglo-Norman:1376 Contract for Tomb Nicholas Loveyne in Antiquaries Jrnl.
