Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Latin, combined with English elements. Partly formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: ad- prefix, Latin umbra , -al suffix1; ad- prefix, umbrella n., -al suffix1.
Etymology: In sense 1 < ad- prefix + classical Latin umbra shade (see umber n.1; with reference to adumbrāre adumbrate v. 3a) + -al suffix1. In sense 2 < ad- prefix + umbr- (in umbrella n.) + -al suffix1; compare abumbral adj. and slightly later adumbrellar adj.
