Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French caséine.
Etymology: < French caséine (1820 or earlier; < classical Latin cāseus cheese (see caseous adj.) + French -ine -in suffix1), with remodelling of the ending after -in suffix1.
1. Biochemistry.
a. Any of a group of closely related proteins which are present in colloidal suspension in milk and can be precipitated by acids; these proteins collectively; = caseinogen n. Also: the product of the precipitation of these proteins, or of the coagulation of milk by rennin (= paracasein n.).
