Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element; modelled on a French lexical item. Etymons: Latin cāseus , -ic suffix.
Etymology: < classical Latin cāseus cheese (see caseous adj.) + -ic suffix, after French caséique (1807 or earlier in acide caséique, attributed to J. L. Proust).
Chemistry. Now rare.
caseic acid n. an acid (supposedly) found in cheese; (in later use also) an acid formed during the hydrolysis of casein.Both substances are of uncertain identity.
