Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin caseation-, caseatio.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin caseation-, caseatio curdling of milk, conversion of milk into cheese (1363 in Chauliac; compare quot. ?a1425 at sense 1) < classical Latin cāseātus mixed with cheese (2nd cent. a.d. in Apuleius; < cāseus cheese (see caseous adj.) + -ātus -ate suffix2) + -iō -ion suffix1; compare -ation suffix. In sense 2 perhaps after German Verkäsung (1862 or earlier in medical use; 18th cent. or earlier in sense 1).Compare French caséation (1771 or earlier in sense 1; 1873 or earlier in sense 2, apparently after English).
