Etymology: < Latin caryātides, < Greek καρυάτιδες, plural of Caryātis, Καρυᾶτις a priestess of Artemis at Caryae (Καρύαι a village in Laconia), also a female figure as below.
Architecture.
A female figure used as a column to support an entablature. Also attributive, as in caryatid figures.
