Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin alalia.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin alalia (1736 or earlier) < a- a- prefix6 + ancient Greek λαλία speech (see -lalia comb. form). Compare French alalie (1814 or earlier), German Alalie (1829 or earlier).
Medicine. Now rare.
Inability to speak normally; loss of the ability to speak, esp. as a result of damage to certain areas of the brain. Cf. aphasia n.
