Etymology: Probably partly (i) < Italian alabastrite (1561–2; 1499 as †alabastritie in the passage translated in quot. 1592; < classical Latin alabastrītēs alabastrites n.); partly (ii) < Middle French alabastrite (1579 or earlier; < classical Latin alabastrītēs alabastrites n.); and partly (iii) directly < classical Latin alabastrītēs alabastrites n. (compare -ite suffix1). Compare slightly earlier alabastrites n.
Alabaster, esp. that composed of gypsum; (also) calcitic alabaster (now historical; cf. alabastrites n.).
