Etymology: < French carte card, chart, or Latin charta, carta ( < Greek χάρτη, χάρτης), leaf of paper + Greek -γράϕος writer + -er suffix¹; compare geographer. The ch- spelling is in accordance with the ultimate etymology (the Greek would be *χαρτογράϕος); but the other is commoner, and perhaps preferred, as not suggesting the pronunciation of ch- in chart.

One who makes or compiles charts or maps.
