单词 alabandical
释义

alabandicaladj.

Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin Alabandicus , -al suffix1.
Etymology: < classical Latin Alabandicus of or belonging to Alabanda (see Alabandic n.), in post-classical Latin also with negative connotation, in sense ‘barbarous’ (1494 or earlier) + -al suffix1. Compare Hellenistic Greek Ἀλαβανδιακός.There seems to have been a belief in ancient authors that people from Alabanda (and Caria in general) were barbaric and uncivilized. The Byzantine Greek grammarian Stephanus mentions the Alabandic book (Ἀλαβανδιακὸν σύγγραμμα) and the Alabandic solecism (Ἀλαβανδιακὸς σολοικισμός), as for example the use of the Greek negative μή for οὐ. This is reported by Hermolaus Barbarus (1494), using post-classical Latin Alabandicus. Erasmus ( Adagia) reports that Homer called Carians βαρβαροϕώνοι ‘of barbarous speech’ (Iliad 2. 867).
Obsolete. rare. Apparently only attested in dictionaries or glossaries.
