Forms: 1800s– acsacal (now rare), 1800s– aksakal, 1800s– aqsaqal, 1900s– axakal (rare).
Origin: A borrowing from a Turkic language.
Etymology: < a word in a Turkic language of Central Asia (e.g. Uzbek aksakal (formerly in Arabic script as aqsaqal)), cognate with Turkish aksakal, literally ‘white beard’ ( < ak- white + sakal beard). Compare Persian āqsaqal, Russian aksakal (both < a Turkic language).Quot. 1811 recounts observations made in Farahabad in 1618, where both Persian and Turkic languages (related to Azeri) were spoken; it is unclear from the context which language Della Valle is citing.
In some Central Asian societies (as among the Uzbeks, Kazakhs,Tajiks, etc.): a village elder, a headman.
