Origin: From a proper name. Etymon: proper name Akita.
Etymology: < Akita (Japanese Akita), the name of a prefecture in the north-west of Honshu, the main island of Japan, where the breed is thought to have originated. Compare Japanese Akita-inu and (less frequently) Akita-ken, both lit. ‘Akita dog’ (first half of the 20th cent.).
A breed of large dog of spitz type, developed in northern Japan; a dog of this breed.A variety of Akita recently bred in North America is sometimes regarded as a separate breed.
