Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin Celtibēria , -an suffix.
Etymology: < classical Latin Celtibēria, the name of the region inhabited by the Celtiberians ( < Hellenistic Greek Κελτιβηρία < Κελτίβηρες , plural (see Celtiberi n.) + ancient Greek -ία -ia suffix1) + -an suffix. Compare Celtiberi n. and the Latin form cited at that entry. Compare also Iberian adj.Compare Middle French, French celtiberien, noun (1517 or earlier) and adjective (1582 or earlier).

1. A member of any of various peoples inhabiting the north-central part of the Iberian peninsula in the pre-Roman and early Roman period, primarily in the area between the Ebro basin and the eastern side of the Meseta plateau; a native of this area.
