Decaisne 1839, in Archives du Muséum d'Histoire Naturelle 1 195, coined in a French context) < Japanese akebi , in the same sense (early 10th cent.; 1603 as aqebi in Vocabulario da Lingoa de Iapam) + scientific Latin -a -a suffix¹ (compare -ia suffix¹).Compare the following earlier attestation of the Japanese name of the plant in an English context:1819 A.
