Origin: Formed within English, by derivation; originally modelled on a French lexical item. Etymons: cellule n., -ated suffix.
Etymology: < cellule n. + -ated suffix, originally after Middle French cellulé (French cellulé ) divided into cells, composed of cells (1546 in Rabelais in an apparently isolated attestation (in the passage translated in quot. 1693), subsequently from the 19th cent.). Compare earlier cellulate adj. and later cellulate v.
Divided into chambers or cells; composed of or containing cells; cellular.
