Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: cellar n.1, -ess suffix1.
Etymology: < cellar n.1 + -ess suffix1, after cellarer n. Compare post-classical Latin cellararissa (1415 in a British source), Old French celeresse (end of the 12th cent.). Compare also (with different suffix) Middle French celeriere (end of the 12th cent. in Old French; French (now rare or hist.) cellerière), and (with elision of the medial syllable) Anglo-Norman celere (c1240 or earlier).
Now historical.
A woman (esp. a nun) in a convent or similar establishment charged with the safe keeping and distribution of provisions. Cf. cellar n.1 1.
