1920 I. F. Henderson & W. D. Henderson Dict. Sci. Terms 8/2 Akaryote, a cell in which the nucleoplasm has not collected together to form a nucleus; a non-nucleated cell.
1992 P. Forterre in Nature 23 Jan. 305/3 I therefore propose the neutral terms akaryotes (without nucleus) and synkaryotes (with nucleus) for a natural classification without prejudice.
2011 P. Forterre in Res. Microbiol. 162 77/2 I suggested in 1992 to replace the terms prokaryote and eukaryote by neutral ones..such as akaryote and synkaryotes (without and with nucleus) to designate the two types of known cellular organization..but this proposal was completely ignored.
This is a new entry (OED Third Edition, September 2012; most recently modified version published online December 2021).
