His Catholic Majesty.The title was used of Ferdinand and Isabella and their descendants by Pope Alexander VI in 1494 (and more formally in 1496) in recognition of their reconquest of Granada from the Moors, their discoveries in the New World, and their strengthening of the Church by various methods, including the Spanish Inquisition and compelling Jews to convert to Christianity or face exile.
