Etymology: < Italian aggiornamento process of revision or modernization, updating (1920; 1959 in a speech by Pope John XXIII with reference to a proposed revision of the Code of Canon Law, 1962 or earlier more generally with reference to the modernization of the Roman Catholic Church; 1678 in sense ‘postponement, adjournment’) < aggiornare to fix a date for (a trial, hearing, etc.) (end of the 13th cent.), to modernize, review, bring up to date (a book, opinion, custom, etc.) (1877; < Old French ajorner adjourn v.) + -mento -ment suffix, after French ajournement adjournment n.
A process of modernization of the policies and institutions of the Roman Catholic Church, initiated by the Second Vatican Council (1962–5). Also in extended use with reference to other institutions or societies.
