单词 carriole
释义

carriolen.

Brit. /ˈkarɪəʊl/, U.S. /ˈkɛriˌoʊl/
Forms: 1700s carriel, 1700s– cariole, 1700s– carriole, 1800s cariol.
Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French carriole.
Etymology: < French carriole, †cariole, denoting a variety of horse-drawn vehicles, especially a two-wheeled carriage or cart, often with a cover, used in the countryside (1587 in Middle French), probably < Old Occitan carriola (first attested 1460, but probably much older) < carri cart, wagon ( < post-classical Latin *carreum , an unattested variant of classical Latin carrus car n.1) + -ola -ola suffix1. Compare carryall n.; folk-etymological association between the two words may have affected the semantic development of both.
