单词 aggerate
释义

aggeratev.

Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin aggerāt-, aggerāre.
Etymology: < classical Latin aggerāt-, past participial stem (see -ate suffix3) of aggerāre to heap up, to put earth round the roots of (a tree), to reinforce, intensify, to exaggerate < agger heap (see agger n.). Compare earlier aggeration n.The sense ‘to quicken pace or going’ mentioned in quot. 1693 is based on (and illustrated by) a supposed phrase in the classical Latin author Curtius Rufus (4. 2), aggerāre spatium ‘to fill the space’, found in editions from the 17th to the 19th centuries. Modern editions read exaggerāre spatium here, where exaggerāre has the sense ‘to heap or pile up (with)’ (compare exaggerate v.). N.E.D. (1894) gives the pronunciation as (æ·dʒĕreit) /ˈædʒəreɪt/.
Obsolete. rare.
transitive. To heap or build up; spec. to bank earth, manure, etc., around (a tree). Also in extended use. Cf. aggest v.
