[apparently after German Zellwand (1828 or earlier)] a rigid layer present outside the cell membrane in plants, fungi, algae, and many bacteria, consisting mainly of cellulose and other polysaccharides (in plants, fungi, and algae) or peptidoglycans (in bacteria), and providing cells with structure and protection.
